AskUI vs TestComplete
Object recognition with record and replay and Vision AI, compared with AskUI's agent that works from the screen alone.
TestComplete · by SmartBear
What it is.
TestComplete is SmartBear's GUI test automation tool for desktop, web and mobile. It identifies UI objects by their properties and offers record and replay, keyword tests and scripting. Since June 2026, Vision AI combines property, OCR and visual recognition.
Where TestComplete is strong
- Strong desktop and Citrix coverage, with a large install base.
- Keyword tests for testers and scripting in several languages for engineers.
- Part of a wider SmartBear suite, including Zephyr, QMetry and Reflect.
Side by side
How they work.
Architecture, not adjectives.
| Question | TestCompleteby SmartBear | AskUIComputer-use agent |
|---|---|---|
| How a test finds the UI | Object properties from a name mapping, with OCR and Vision AI. | An agent reads the screen like a tester does. No selectors, no object repository, no recordings. |
| How tests are written | Record and replay, keyword tests, or scripts. | Plain language. Your manual test cases, often written from requirements. |
| Surfaces | Windows desktop, web and mobile. | Desktop and remote computers, web browsers, Android emulators and phones, iOS simulators, several computers in one test, and embedded screens with no DOM. |
| Access needed to the app | Reads object properties of the application under test. | None. No source code, instrumentation or accessibility tree. AgentOS gives the agent screen, keyboard and mouse. |
| When the screen is not as expected | Runs recorded or scripted steps as written. Self-healing adapts object identification when the UI changes. | The agent decides each next action from the screen. It closes unexpected pop-ups and corrects its own misclicks. Two attempts per step; In-Flight Guidance stops runs that loop; Dreaming proposes fixes for review. |
| Integrations beyond the UI | Scripting in several languages, and API testing through other SmartBear products. | Tool Store: SQL over ODBC, HTTP, shell and file checks, off until enabled. Custom C# tools and MCP servers, for example Vector CANoe or dSPACE, called from plain-language steps. |
| Test format | TestComplete projects. | Markdown, CSV or JSON files in your own Git repository. |
| Role of AI | Vision AI and self-healing alongside property-based recognition. | The engine. A computer-use agent performs every step. |

Which one fits
Both are good at something.
Choose TestComplete when
Your applications expose stable object properties and your team already maintains a name mapping.
Choose AskUI when
You want tests without an object repository, written in plain language, that also reach screens with no accessible properties.
Questions
- TestComplete has Vision AI now. How is AskUI different?
- In TestComplete, visual recognition works next to its property-based engine. In AskUI, the agent works only from the screen, and tests are plain-language steps instead of recordings or scripts.
- Can we move TestComplete tests to AskUI?
- Most teams start from their manual test cases, not from the scripts. The manual cases become AskUI tests as written.
